Pipes, probability and prioritisation: modelling railway drainage
Network Rail hosts a suite of Asset Investment Planning (AIP) models on Copperleaf to forecast the future of our aging railway infrastructure under different funding scenarios. Safety is paramount on the railway and therefore our models are founded on a common risk-based prioritisation approach. Drainage plays a safety-critical role by stabilising our earthworks and keeping water off the track. As the age and history of our drainage asset base is largely unknown, we model drainage asset condition stochastically and relate failure likelihood directly to poor condition. In this session, I will speak about our current approach to drainage AIP modelling, limitations due to data immaturity and our aspirations for improving asset management in the future.

A common value framework for the water sector
Despite all the progress on best value in the water sector, the challenge of comparability and consistency comes up time and again. To overcome this, we’ve developed a common value framework, or CVF. Working with regulators, companies, and consultants, sponsored by Ofwat’s innovation fund, we’re working to agree a common way to define what best value means for our sector. Aiming at PR29, the vision is that the CVF forms the starting point for all value assessments, including for WRMP, DWMP and WINEP. Decision support tools, such as Copperleaf, are crucial to delivering on this much needed step change in how we deliver for customers, society, and the environment.
