Copperleaf CEO Inspires at the 2023 World Utilities Congress

After the success of last year’s event, I was delighted to attend the 2023 World Utilities Congress at Abu Dhabi’s National Exhibition Centre from 8-10 May. Thousands of delegates from the United Arab Emirates, Gulf Cooperation Council, and other parts of the world gathered for the 3-day conference, bringing together policymakers, industry professionals, innovators and academics from across the utility sector.

Attendees discussed major trends impacting their operations, exchanged knowledge, and networked with industry leaders via a range of panel discussions, demos, presentations and more. The focus of this year’s conference was enabling a secure and sustainable future for utilities, and the panels hit the ground running on day one as environment ministers discussed the need for the energy transition and the investment levels required to achieve this.

Copperleaf® was proud to exhibit at the conference, and thrilled to have our CEO, Paul Sakrzewski, joining us from Vancouver, Canada to take part in a global leadership panel on ‘The role of ESG (environmental, social, and governance) and sustainable finance in power, water, gas and district cooling.’

The panel included thought leaders from leading organisations including TAQA, be’ah, and Catalyst Investment Management, and discussed the challenges and opportunities related to the inclusion of ESG measures, policies, and net zero targets in everyday decision making.

Many organisations have committed to ambitious emissions reduction projects to support their strategic objectives, but struggle to demonstrate how each investment contributes to ESG performance, and why one option was selected instead of another.

Paul explained how most companies and executives have an implicit understanding of value, but that robust frameworks are needed to align investment decisions with strategic goals. Copperleaf helps organisations create the highest-value plans by offering a practical way to identify and incorporate ESG metrics consistently across the organisation.

With more than 150 exhibiting companies and 250 expert speakers, we were delighted to talk to and hear from some of the key players in the utility world. The event was an excellent opportunity to network with thought leaders around the globe and gain their perspective on the trends and challenges facing utilities today. Other highlights from the conference included discussions on the path to net zero, how businesses can foster next generation innovation, and the importance of digital technologies to improve operational efficiency.
