Grow with Copperleaf: Jay Agrawal Shares His Career Journey

Employee Feature Jay Agrawal

At Copperleaf®, we believe in investing in our people and providing growth opportunities for every level in their careers. As part of our Grow with Copperleaf series, we’re featuring stories from employees who have advanced their professional growth at the company. In this interview, we speak with Jay Agrawal about his career journey at Copperleaf.

Can you tell us about your professional background and what led you to Copperleaf?

“I joined Copperleaf as a software developer co-op in 2016. During my internship, I contributed to Cost Estimation, a product innovation developed in collaboration with our client Anglian Water that enables organizations to quickly create standardized, comprehensive, and defensible budgetary estimates. For my final work term project, I was given the chance to deliver a presentation on Cost Estimation to the entire company—which was around 100 people at the time. It’s exciting to see how much Copperleaf has grown since then!”

What’s your current role at Copperleaf? And what has your journey been like at the company?

“Given my incredible co-op experience, I was fortunate to be offered a full-time opportunity at Copperleaf after I graduated from university. As a software developer, I contributed to Predictive Analytics and led the implementation of Intelligent Bundling, two capabilities within Copperleaf Asset™. My main focus as a developer was on how to build solutions to our clients’ existing challenges, but I was always interested in seeing the bigger picture, trying to figure out what the next industry challenge would be, and how we might effectively implement, support, and market a better solution to these problems.

Because of this interest, I decided to transition from software development to product management. Today, I’m the Product Manager for Investment Capture, Guided Investment Management, and Geospatial Capabilities. I work closely with our clients as well as our development, design, client success, client experience, product support, marketing, and sales teams to ensure we continue to deliver the highest value to our clients.”

How has Copperleaf supported your growth?

“Copperleaf has been so supportive of my career growth. I was encouraged by my team leads to transition from software development to product management, and they consistently ensure I feel fulfilled and am provided with the right opportunities for growth. Additionally, through Copperleaf’s mentorship program, I’ve been matched with several mentors who were instrumental in helping me learn more about product management and business strategy.”

How would you describe the culture at Copperleaf?

“The Copperleaf cultural values that resonate with me are embracing transparency and openness, valuing everyone’s perspective regardless of hierarchy, promoting from within the organization, and the willingness to always lend a helping hand. These characteristics truly made my co-op experience exceptional back in 2016, and they’re why I decided to join the company again upon graduation. I still experience these same qualities at Copperleaf today and I appreciate the opportunity to continue learning and growing with the company.”

What accomplishments or projects are you most proud of?

“I’ve been fortunate to contribute to several meaningful initiatives at the company. Most memorably, I supported the implementation of Intelligent Bundling for Copperleaf Asset, as well as the adoption of Investment Capture for over 25% of our clients.”

What are you most excited about for the future?

“I recently joined the Geospatial Enablement team and am thrilled to learn from some of the best GIS (geographic information system) experts in the industry and to help enhance our client’s asset investment planning through GIS integration.”

What kinds of things do you like to do in your spare time?

“I’m passionate about reading—some of my favourite authors are Ayn Rand and Charles Dickens. I also really enjoy extreme sports, architecture, and traveling.”
